FF Friday

rachelmanija had the idea for a FF Friday where you post about f/f books/stories/comics/fanfics on friday. More details here.

I'm probably not able to do it every friday but will try to join some of the time. Maybe some of you would like to participate as well?

For this week I'd like to recommend Princess Princess by Strangely Katie.

It's a very sweet webcomic about a princess in a tower who gets rescued by another princess and their adventures.

What I’ve Just Finished Reading

Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls by Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo. A really cool children's book that tells the life stories of 100 women. A lot of them I already knew, like Ada Lovelace or Maria Sibylla Merian, but some were new to me. Like Alicia Alonso who was a blind Ballerina who founded the Alicia Alonso Ballet Company which is now the Ballet National De Cuba.
Every story is accompanied by a illustration. These were created by many different artist and are beautiful and as diverse as the women they portray. You can see some of them here. There's a second volume out and I'm going to wish for it at my local library.

What I’m Reading Now

Reasons To Stay Alive by Matt Haig. A book about the author's experience with depression. Interesting so far, but tough to read because some of it hits close to home.

What I Plan to Read Next

Probably Arsenic for Tea by Robin Stevens, the second book in the Wells & Wong series.

Not Enough Picnics - You know what is wrong with modern-day books? Not enough picnics. It’s like at some point someone said “You know, people find it really boring when the characters have a good time,” and therefore good times were banished from books FOREVERMORE, even though really picnics and tea parties and canoe excursions is often exactly what I want.

The Male Glance - To be clear, the show about boys got way too much credit, and the show about girls got way too little. This is how we approach male vs. female work. Let’s call it the “male glance,” the narrative corollary to the male gaze. We all have it, and it’s ruining our ability to see good art.

What I’ve Just Finished Reading

Miss Lizzie by Walter Satterthwait. Great book. It's about a girl named Amanda who spends the holidays at the sea with her family. Then she finds out that their next door neighbor is Lizzie Borden. They strike up a friendship but then Amanda's mother get's found murdered - killed with a hatchet. Naturally the suspicion falls on Lizzie Borden - and on Amanda since she was the one who found the body and had had a fight with her step mother the morning before she was killed. Lizzie and Amanda Team up to find out the truth.
The author knows how to turn a phrase and paints very vivid characters. What I liked best about this book though is the friendship between Amanda and Lizzie. It's strong and believe-able, but not without its suspicions and vulnerabilities.
Sadly there's no fic at all out there. I'd love to read more about them and could totally ship them, once Amanda has grown up. There is however a sequel and i've already ordered it.

What I’m Reading Now

A Room of One's Own by Virginia Woolf. I've read this before years ago, but nowadays I have more patience for its meandering. I disagree rather vehemently with the assertion that anger or affinity for a cause constitute flaws in a book.
It reminds me a bit of a poem by Mascha Kaleko: Die Leistung der Frau in der Kultur

What I Plan to Read Next

Haven't decided yet.

Better late than never

I've been thinking a lot about what goals I'd like to work towards this year lately.

Books: I'd like to read at least 75 books this year. I'd like to read more books I own but haven't read yet to cut down on my book piles a bit. As always I'd like to read more poetry and more comics. Also more essays. I'd like to let my reading be guided more by fun than by ought tos.

Writing: I'd like to work on writing more poems. Do some writing exercises. Post more often to lj/dw and comment more. Maybe try my hand at writing some fanfic.

Podfic: I'd like to record and post at least two podfics.

Habitat: I'd like to neaten up my room - which trust me, is a Major Project. Declutter and get rid of things I don't use and who don't bring me joy.

Body: I'd like to lose some weight. Exercise more. Feel more comfortable in my body. Wear skirts and dresses more often. Go swimming in the summer a couple of times. If I'm brave enough, go dancing with my best friend when I visit him.

License: Get my driver's license. Retake the theoretical exam. Take more driving lessons. Take the practical exam. Work on my fear of exams.

I've been thinking of putting up regular post where I and anyone else who's working towards something can check in, vent or get support when it's not going well or celebrate when something's working out well. Any goals welcome, no matter how big or small. No pressure to check in unless you want to. Would anybody else be interested in something like that?
